I have recently purchased a very very nice 650SS - 151 BJW - which was featured in last month's issue of Classic Bike Guide (actually a re-run of an article previously run in Real Classic November 2017, but that's journalism for you).
Still getting to grips with it - literally when it comes to manhandling it onto the centre stand.
However, for the life of me, I cannot find how to reset the trip odometer - is this actually possible, or is it's presence just ornamental?

Is the speedo in the headlamp?

Yes - headlamp type speedo…
Yes - headlamp type speedo mounting.
Will fish around for a toggle inside the cable aperture tomorrow.
I have searched through all the books for an answer to this but could find nothing.
Thanks for the pointer Alan

All sorted Alastair?
Did your bike have the toggle?
Incidentally, I have just fitted an extended trip reset knob/toggle thingy from Timeless Motorcycles (previously Gaggs) as the one kindly provided by Ashley Pople when he refurbished my speedo was too short (ending at the headlamp grommet on my bike) to be comfortably used without gripping with pliers.
The new one is eight inches long, so is well clear of the grommet for easy use at the filling station. Therefore I have a six inch one going spare if anyone can use it. (No tittering at the back!)

Thanks for further pointers …
Thanks for further pointers - just back from holiday so still catching up.
Definitely no knob/ toggle thingy and nothing within either aperture at the bottom of the headlamp housing.
Will look into getting something from Timeless Motorcyles - thanks for the tip Alan.

Quick update. Took headlamp…
Quick update.
Took headlamp out and looked at what is going on below the speedo.
No reset extension fitted, although the trip reset spigot is present complete with hole for split pin, so it hasn't broken off.
New 8" trip reset ordered from Timeless for not very much.
A job for next weekend.

From your opening post
Hi Alastair,
Glad you got your trip meter sorted.
Re: your comment about getting the bike on the centre stand, I also found it hard work until I tried a members bike with a 'roll-on' centre stand. What a transformation! Push down with foot, easy lift on subframe and job done. Highly recommended.
Worst thing is having to remove entire primary drive to get to the fittings,
NOC shop has one in stock....
Regards,
George

If so the trip reset uses a toggle attached to the back of the speedo through the headlamp cable grommet. This you pull down and turn clockwise to zero the trip.
If the speedo is one designed for a bracket, there should be a button extending vertically downward on the left hand side of the speedo body.
As you can’t see a button, it suggests the speedo is a headlamp type one. A quick look at the back should reveal the trip reset device.
A more learned forum member should be along soon.
