Carb manifold to head gaskets

Forums

Hi. I’m putting together a single carb Dommie 99 (1960) engine. I’ve got the correct carb manifold for the cylinder head. However, when I removed the manifold there was a gasket on each of the inlet ports, so the gasket sits between the manifold and the head. As the gaskets were split I threw them away, but now I can’t find replacements. I’ve looked on the Andover Norton, RGM and Norvil web sites but they aren’t listed. They’re also  not shown in my genuine 1960 parts catalogue. That makes me think that they aren’t required, but I can’t believe the manifold is supposed to bolt onto the head without some kind of gaskets. Anyone have any idea on where I can get the gaskets? If not I’ve got some thin oil/fuel proof gasket material (the light green stuff) - should I just make some out of that?

Thanks

Regards

Tony

You want heat insulating spacers of the correct bore for your head/manifold.

All the usual suspects supply these, including this august institution. Page 2 of carb parts in the heavyweights section of the NOC shop is your friend.

Hi Tony,

I see Norvil list manifold gaskets 704919 (single, but includes Dommi in the applications) and 704920 (double, for ss and Atlas). I'm sure that one is for horizontal carb studs...

Could be what you want?

However, as you say you have the manifold and gasket paper,  I would suggest that you make them yourself, either as one piece or 2.

Hope that this helps,

George

At one time I would have said you definately need insulators. After riding my 99  last winter I suffered with carb icing  which stopped the engine on several occasions .. And my fuel was eth free. With ethanol it would have been worse.  It was just above freezing and damp, My heated jacket was on.

These maniflod insulating washers come is three versions. One version for the SS head where they are mounted horizontally and have mounting holes spaced 2" apart.

The pre-1959 heads (both 500cc & 600cc) used smaller vertically mounted washers with 1 1/2" apart vertical mounting studs. The later 1958 to 61 heads had 1 5/8" spaced vertical studs.

A 1960 engine should use the 1 5/8" versions which are part number 021572. The attachment shows the smaller 1 1/2" type.

Early engines need part number D12/984 which became T2241 and then 002241

The Mk 1 Model 7 engine did not have these insulators and consequently the carb got very hot and vapourised the fuel causing loads of problems. Foremost being a re-design of the inlet tracks and manifold itself.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

Thank you Philip for the photo and the part numbers. That gives me something to work on now.
