7/8" fulcrum

Forums

Does anyone know who might sell a 7/8" fulcrum clutch lever for a 7/8th handle bar?

My Electra currently has a 1 1/8" fulcrum and is a bit tough to handle for any length of time.

A 3 minutes search. Probably more could be found.

.. with adjusters are easy to come by in the 7/8" pivot version however plain blades (correct for your bike?) are somewhat rarer. I found some for my ES2 (brake rather than clutch) from one of the ebay sellers but can't remember which at the moment.

Thanks for the replies.  I searched for quite some time before turning to the forum for suggestions. (Feked never turned up.) Most sellers of hand levers list only the handlebar size so I tried a few individual contacts of them to find out if they had the right ones.  Many didn't know or wouldn't take the time to pull a set off the shelf and measure.  Thus my reason for a question here.

I found a proper set from an American supplier.  It will be interesting to see you how much difference they may make to the strength it takes to operate the clutch (which I've insured has the correct cable adjustment.)

I always go to auto-jumbles with a ruler and I have seen many of the 7/8 pivot centre levers on sale. You just have to go through boxes of them to find them. Some of the levers are not that long, and some are much longer. You have to be aware of this when looking through a selection of these levers at jumbles. I have found both the levers that are ball ended and those with out.

Jack, Dan,

All advertising literature and road tests from the time of Electra manufacture show ball ended levers on the Electra model. My Electra came with some VERY patinated and bent levers which I believe to be original.

Ball ended.

The lever mount on the right, certainly for UK bikes, had an integral choke lever and a 5/16 hole for the mirror stem.

Probably done for the American market who never accepted pedestrian slicers on the front mudguard either.

I sympathise with your comments about a stiff clutch action on Norton Lightweights. I have found that smooth cable runs, a cable in good condition and cable lubrication make a tremendous difference to the action. Regular use helps as well. The Lightweight clutch cable is one of the longest I've ever seen, entering the gearbox near horizontally, from behind, and right at the back of the unit engine/gearbox.

Reducing the fulcrum from 1 1/8 to 7/8 will not change the fact that the clutch cable is under par. It will just make it easier for you to tear the nipple off the cable at the lever end. A problem I've found in the past.

Check your clutch cable is an Electra one. It should have mid-cable adjustment and a pear nipple embedded in a separate 3/8 adapter at the lever end. Shorter early Navigator/Jubilee plus ball ended lever with adjuster may have been fitted by previous owners. The ball ended levers were the dogs b*****s in the early sixties.

Good riding

Peter
