I am considering fitting a full flow oil filter to my 1956 Dominator 99. Any advice as to which type and are there any associated fitting problems ? I note that there are kits available for the Commando.

hello now do bear in mind that the Commando oil pump is a six start oil pump witch runs twice as fast as a three start oil pump so its not that a good idea to fit something thats for a later motorcycle, you may be better just running on a good 20-50 like Castrol LX 20/50 or Morris W20/50 or Duckhams Classic Q20/50 and leave everything as the factory intended your anna j

Dommy pipes are smaller diameter. Probably also need a different bracket.

oil filter
Yes, the oil fixed feed and return pipes measure 5/16" dia on my Dominator whereas the kits seem to be for 3/8" pipes. The inlet and outlet connections on the oil filter cap will be 3/8" dia to suit the hoses. So the search continues !
Has anybody out there found a suitable oil filter cap that has the 5/16" hose connections and also the 5/16" bore hose ?

filter plate pipes
I bought a Commando filter plate and fitted it to my '55 Model 88. The oil system is otherwise standard for the bike, ie 3-start oil pump drive. The pipe stubs on the filter plate are the same size as the pipes on the bike. There was no issue plumbing it into the return lines.
I made a mounting plate running between the two engine-plate bolts on the right rear just in front of the rear fork pivot, with the pipe stubs pointing upwards. The oil pipes pass over the top of the gearbox. I would have liked the installation better if the filter itself was vertical, so that it could be filled before installation, and not leak oil on being removed.

I bought my filter plates in the mid-late '80s. I bought 3 of them, all the same. I'm not sure if the filter plates were from FairSpares (now called NorVil) or RGM, as I bought Norton parts from both. The oil pipe spigots are 5/16".
One filter plate went on the Dominator 88, another on a BSA A10 Super Rocket, and the third remains unused. The Super Rocket did many miles on high detergent 40W diesel oil and the timing side bush lasted well.
For the Dominator install, what I did was remove the old rubber oil pipes from a spare Dominator pipe assembly, and fit new rubber pipes with hose clamps. Before fitting, I bent the return pipe a few degrees so that it passed between the timing case and the engine plate. The rubber pipe then passed over the top of the gearbox, vertically onto the filter plate. The return pipe exited vertically from the filter plate, curved forwards and then curved 180 degrees backwards to the oil tank union.
Before fitting the plate, I took it to a local motor factor, and got a filter to fit. I was told that a Chrysler Alpine one was an excellent match. My friendly expert who also worked in a Brit bike shop thought it was a better filter than they offered, as it had a by-pass valve in case of blockage, and was cheaper than theirs as well....

Norvil do one
Apparently Norvil do one (Part number 064283) that is supposed to fit all models in various ways for about £45 plus VAT and carriage but I have no experience of this. There are photos (shown on Domi) on their website:

I'd be interested in any experience that anyone has on this?
Regarding the use of synthetic oil - better for higher temperatures, reduced temperature degradation, therefore longer life...but if you change oil regularly, why would you?

I have one from Norvil about…
I have one from Norvil about ten years or more ago. They do a neat stainless steel bracket. But I had buy more hose...
At Ardingly there was Dommie with the top end take off pipe taken from a home made union from before the filter. So with a clear tube, you can see that the oil is flowing quickly after an oil change. Otherwise there can be a scary delay as the cartridge is filled.

I also bought a Commando kit…
I ordered a kit for my 99 many years ago. The pipes were no use as too big,and there were no fittings for a dommy .I also was warned that the lightly pressed in steel nipples could come loose in the alloy filter housing.when hot and soak your rear tyre. That was enough for me. Back of shed.

I'd like to see how Paul threaded the hoses. I've looked at lots of Dommie installations and they mostly have the pipes looped over and under the gearbox. It all looks a bit untidy but at least then they are inspectable. I worry about chafing through especially where the bottom pipe passes close to the bottom of that odd little cosmetic cover between the back of the gearbox and the frame loop, and I do try to inspect quite often.

Oil filter
I have found all the above comments of interest and whilst I like the idea of fitting a cartridge type oil filter and appreciate it's advantages, I have decided to leave my bike as standard and use Millers 20/50 and change it regularly.
All the oil filter tops that I have researched have 3/8" dia pipe spigots suitable for a Commando
rather than a Dommie.

You need to get a Dommy kit as there are differences. I need one too as I am now running on 10/30 fully synthetic.(fingers crossed).
