Currently rebuilding my 1959 M50. I am having problems with would I assumed would be a very easy job ! I am trying to refit the sprocket to the taper on the crankshaft but the woodruff key is jamming before the sprocket is fully on the taper. The key I have has a 'cut off' at one end. Should this flat end go towards or away from the engine ? Does it make any difference ? The key seems to move in the crankshaft slot as the sprocket is pushed on. This causes the jam. Any hints/tricks/advice on how to do this will be very welcome.

Check how far the sprocket goes on without the key, check the fit of key in the sprocket and shaft ,file key to fit. adjust height of key with file so it does not stop taper fully engaging.key must not contact any washer or nut.Cut off end is probably for this reason.

The key in question is the same key that came off the bike when it was dismantled, so the size cannot be the issue. I understand the principles but for some reason I cannot execute the fitting of this sprocket. I think it is because the keys moves rotating on it's curved underside such that it jams in the sprocket keyway.

It is a common problem.Try a smear of silicone to hold the key(on the side flanks only) in the key way..only a bit mind otherwise it causes problems
tap the key down gently and level with a spirit level or by eye if you can.
Once set the sprocket will slide on.

Just because it came off the bike does not guarantee its the correct part or fit, I just had to stone a gear to a nice fit. Its been in that box for 57 years, now it works right.
