CFM was a Chester series issued from May 1937 onwards. It is a fairly low number so probably from that year.
According to The Kithead Trust, the pre-suffix Cheshire index cards have been retained at Cheshire Record Office so you may be able to find out more. Probably only engine capacity. I don't believe that they usually recorded frame / chassis numbers on the cards. That would be the ideal as it would enable a cross-check with the factory records re. original spec .

Thank you Richard, I'll try that. My uncle wouldn't give me the logbook for the Model 18 when I was 14 ; why, I don't know but in 1982, DVLA took 18 months to let me have GNT 222 ( the original registration number) back on the Norton ! Have they speeded up, since then?

DVLA have no record of the bike, so it's either gone to the great scrapheap or was taken off the road many years ago and has dropped off the DVLA records. So it may eventually be restored and reappear, as long as it's registered before the DVLA reuse the reg number.
