1950 Big 4

Forums

Could anybody help me, I'm building the engine of my 1950 big 4 and have hit a problem. The cylinder hold down studs are 3/8 diameter X 16tpi (either Whitworth or UNC) yet all the suppliers I've tried only seem to stock cycle thread versions of these nuts. Should these studs actually be cycle thread or are the 16tpi nuts available.

Hope you can help

I think the end that goes into the crankcase should be BSW (Whitworth) - UNC/UNF wasn't used on these bikes at all - while the thread on the other end that takes the nuts should be Cycle.

Chances are then in her 68 years it's just the wrong studs have been fitted and assuming I can get them I can go back to the originals.

Thanks for the info

Somebody's probably used a bit of studding (allthread). It should be easy enough to get Whitworth nuts so you can lock 2 together to extract the old studs.
