Re: Which dyno for 1937 model 18?

Forums

Hi Guys,

I got my factory records check back and it appears my frame and engine are matching from factory which is great!

It also said it came with extras: Dyno, Footchange, Horn and speedo.

Im just wondering what model/type of dyno would have come with this?

I have had a look and there seems to be a few different types out there.

With the numbers matching, I'd like to get is as close to original as I can.

Thanks, Dylan.

I have a 1936 Model 18 and it has a Lucas Model E3M-3 TYPE HO Dynamo. I've recently had it overhauled and changed it from a

3 brush to a 2 brush dynamo. This meant I had to install a separate regulator and I chose to use a solid state one; not authentic but I thought it more practical.

1937 was the year in which they added a proper CVC unit (sitting above the rear upper right side stay) with a two brush dynamo.

The CVC is a standard Lucas item but its box has a special bottom design with inverted 'V' shapes cuts to fit over the frame tube. I've not seen them for sale but you can mount a normal one on the tool box bracket.

It's not too difficult to modify the standard MCR1 CVC which is what Lucas did...a pair of slightly crude 'V's cut in the base sides and a small bracket soldered on the back. The 'eyes' for the hooks on the lower clamp are already there as part of the basic pressing.

I would post a photo os two but I struggle to re-size and I've given up with this message board's photo size limit.
