Clutch Centre Nut removal

Forums

I'm ready to remove the engine and gearbox from my 1959 Dommie 99 with just the primary side to dismantle but I'm having trouble undoing the clutch centre nut. My rattle gun won't shift it even after plenty of WD 40 and a gas blowlamp.

I've been told to get a clutch locking tool which looks like a clutch plate with tangs on both edges and a long bar attached. Nothing on the Club catalogue, can anyone point me in the right direction to buy one please?

Thanks

Or any advice on other means of removal appreciated.

EDIT: sorry jumped in too early, found one on the Andover Norton site!

Always good to have the right tools butI have always put the bike in top gear, with a good fit 1/2" drive socket(22mm also fits mine) and long tee bar/breaker bar ,a spanner on the rear brake arm nut( with foot providing the 3rd hand), a hammer to give the bar a whack if needed. The book says 70 footpounds but the hub/spider stop is not really strong so I think 50 footpounds plus locktite is enough. You may well need the proper threaded hub puller , levering behind the drum is a no no. A pukka engine sprocket puller only just managed to get the engine sprocket off, A commando one won't work unless you drill and tap the sprocket .

OK thanks, I don't have any spare old clutch plates so I'll see how I go with socket and long tee bar. Will need to reassemble back wheel and brake and chain first.

With the bike in top gear and the back brake held (footed?) on, a socket, a bar and a hammer to get the nut started and you won't have any problems.

Barry I have just read your profile and see you are a member of AJS/Matchless club, the tool you require is the same for all AMC type clutch, isn't there any AMC member local to you who has one, I'm also an AMC club member and I have one hanging in the shed, [won't an AMC holder have a couple of worn plates Ive loads of the boogers?] as Clit Eastwood would say 'you gotta think laterally' unfortunately I'm oop in Kent bit to far for you to come borrow it I'm afraid kind regards

Thanks everyone for the responses, suffice to say that the centre nut is now off using one of the those clutch holding tools with the long bar borrowed from a friend of a friend. What a great community motorcycling is.

Popped off the engine sprocket with my own cheapo puller.
