Hi The photo's mean nothing to me as i can't make out what i am looking at .Tha sump plug has a filter held in by a washer and clip there is no pick up to go into the filter so what are we filtering .The sump plug screws into the casing and sits up into the crank case with nothing else atached to it .I am lost for a reason for having a filter there .Steve

The pictures show engine debris which has been prevented from being circulated by the oil pump by the filter. You don't need the filter, but if any part of your engine starts to fail, bits of sharp metal will fall to the sump, be sucked through the oil pump and fed to the big ends and top end. Again and again. So the choice to keep it or leave it out is entirely up to you. Gordon.

Steve,
The symptoms in both the cases shown above would have been increased crankshaft end float. The remains in both cases are those of crankshaft shims.

Hi Steve,
I know what you are getting at. The sump plug does indeed stick up into the crankcases. The scavenge side of the oil pump draws oil through the plug and that filter. If you get down under your bike with a torch, you will see a hole in the side of the threaded hole. That hole leads to the scavenge side of the oil pump and is the return to the oil tank. Oil is drawn down through the filter and out the side of the plug. seemples. When you replace the filter do ensure that the skinny circlip is properly seated in its groove, You could even consider a drop of loctite on it for peace of mind. Later 750s did away with the big plug but it re-appeared on later models.
