Sprag clutch failure: oversize engine sprocket

Forums

Part Number:064681

I had a problem with sprag clutches failing, which was odd because I had fitted a new engine sprocket.

I contacted Andover Norton, who were excellent as usual, and then arranged to take the failed parts in.

They measured these whilst I waited and then told me that there was a batch of Engine Sprockets that were machined oversize, these sprockets caused the sparg clutches to fail.

Bear in mind 2 to 3 thou wear will do it anyway.

I had one of the items that was machined over size.

Replaced that and the sprag all now works fine.

Even with 'in tolerance' parts, sprag flipping/crunching can happen. To eliminate this happening the clearances must be closed up. (aka the Ken Merrick mod) The easiest way to do this is to modifiy the drive gear with a hardened sleeve (to make it fractionally bigger, so the sprag cannot flip) Even doing this to used parts will make them fully servicable.

Peter
