The correct Interstate tank for a 72 would be Glass Fibre and best avoided, they then went to steel and there were 2 or 3 versions with the later ones being slimmer and with reduced capacity but not enough to matter. The tank will push you back about 4", but the footrests will be in the same position and that kills my hips so rearsets are a useful mod,
Hi John
thanks for your reply,
do all the tanks fit the different year bikes.
So if I got the later steel tank would it bolt straight on without modification.
Cheers

An important point is that…
An important point is that the wider metal tank was made slimmer to reduce the tendency for knees to stick out in the wind and flap about at highway speeds thus making long distances uncomfortable.

Hi Robert,
Thanks for the reply, I have purchased a metal interstate tank from the UK I do not know if it is the slimmer type that you mention here.
I will measure it once it arrives and post the dimensions on another post and hopefully someone will confirm what it is, with that said it will not change things only nice to know.
Cheers

The Slimmer tank was used on the MK3 and was baffled, the early steel tanks are bigger and not baffled.

I have both tanks on my two 850 Interstates - larger tank on a Mk 1A and smaller one on a Mk 3 - and have just done some measurements. The top section of the tank with filler cap mounted on it , running from front to back , is slightly wider at the lower rear in the larger tank. If you measure across the width of the top section between the two edges and right at the bottom of the rear , just above the top frame tube recess , the larger Interstate tank is 22.5 cms while the smaller is 21.5 cms.
Otherwise you can fill the tank with water and measure the volume - the larger tank holds about 25 to 26 litres while the smaller Interstate tank holds about 22 litres.

Hi Andy
There are a lot of poor quality Interstate tanks for sale and it would be good to identify a quality replacement . My friend's Mk3 has is an awful replacement tank fitted, humped backed fat looking tank, with poor fitting leaking cap, the paint is lifting, and the brown sealer is breaking down and clogging the jets and so on.A few questions about your new tank, would you tell us who you bought it from,
is it finished painted or bare metal or primer,
is it the inside coated/sealed.
how is the fit and seal of the cap.
Are the threads correct for the taps
Are the threaded bosses for the mounting studs and security strap strong and in the in the correct positions
Best regards
Katherine

Hi Katherine,
The tank is an original steel tank which I purchased from Ebay UK, the tank has various dents but that does not worry me as I repair my own tinware.
I was pleased to find that the inside of the tank very clean with no sign of rust or pitting, the price paid including postage to Australia was quite reasonable. These metal tanks are hard to find now and was offered a tank in perfect condition here but with a price to make your eyes water.
So with 4-5 hours work on panel beating I should have a nice tank that is a reasonable price.
Sorry I could not be of more help to you.
Cheers
