Keihin air filter.

Forums

Hello,

I am near completion of a restoration of a 1971 750 Commando. I have installed an Amal Mk2 2932 carb with a Keihin air filter which when mounted is up against the front panel of the battery box. I have 2 questions, firstly, the breather from the top anterior of the oil tank, should I feed it into the air filter? This would probably mean drilling a hole into the back of the air filter, or should I feed it to waste or the chain? Would looping it to the chain oiler feed be a bad idea?

Okay, fourth question, are there adaptors or a system to mount the carb with the original airbox. I know that there is an air box front with a single hole, however, the diameter of this hole is 2 inches whilst the inlet port of the carb is 2.25 inches.

I wouldn't be drilling a hole in the air filter. Route the pipe to a catch tank of some sort, I use an old shampoo bottle as it fits in the battery compartment. Even with the standard air cleaner you're better off feeding it into a catch tank rather than the filter. You could also route the breather to the ground but the catch tank is better and you can at least see what is coming out. I wouldn't feed it to the chain as a lot of what comes out is water vapour which wouldn't do much for the chain.

Ref air filter. The K&N filters are pretty good. If you did use the single hole front plate the fact that the hole in the plate is slightly smaller isn't going to make much, if any, difference. Unless you are seeking ultimate performance, in which case you wouldn't be using a single carb'.

On my 850, which of course has a different breathing arrangement, I just took a large bore pipe to the back of the bike. There was never any sign of oil from that.

Thanks Ian. Why didnât I think of that?

Iâll stick with the Keihin filter then.
