SWINGING ARM PIVOT SPINDLE

Forums

I am trying to remove the pivot spindle from a 74 Commando swinging arm and following what I believe to be the manual instructions. Insert appropriate size bolt into the threaded end of the spindle and use a locknut to tighten down. From their wiggle and pull the spindle out??

It simply doesnât want to budge, I am not missing something here and the spindle is actually threaded into the arm or the frame is it?

It probably hasnât been previously removed so I expect it may be corroded in though I have had penetrant spray all over it (and into it!) for a week and canât get it to shift.

Anybody got any good ideas?

Thanks in advance

john have you removed locking bolt which bolts through in the middle of the swinging arm and locates the spindle or the two cotter pins as on a mk 3

Thanks for your response Steve. Yes, locking bolt out and I have been squirting penetrating spray in there

I recently replaced a swing arm spindle on mine and needed a slide hammer to do the job. I bought a bolt of the correct thread to screw into the end of the swing arm spindle and welded a length of stud bar to the end of it. Then with a hefty piece of steel on the stud bar I was able to drag the swing arm spindle out. I would not have got it out without.

Where in the country are you - I'm happy for you to borrow my slide hammer if you can't get fixed up elsewhere.

Hi Dave, that's a kind offer - I came to the same conclusion myself that a slide hammer was the answer and caught one on good old FleaBay before I saw your message. I had been thinking to get one anyway so hopefully it will do the trick! thanks again

Hi

Just changed mine during a compleate strip down. Mine to was jammed solid, it took a 5lb hammer and a drift to knock it out from the other side. i posted a picture of it.

On plus side i was told that the bushes in the swing arm are very hard wearing, and they are i bought a standard size replacement pin and it is a sliding fit with no play.

You can buy over size pin but assume you have to ream the cradle.

Good luck.
