Just about to have the wheels rebuilt, and removed a set of TT100 410x19

My plan is to ride the bike and feel the TT100s are bit dated, and would like more modern rubber please let me have your choice so I can order them up.

The original TT100 that I took off are at least 40 years old, and about to go in the bin if you have need of them for say static or museum display email me.

Avon Road Rider tyres in the 90/90 front and 100/90 rear seem to really suit the machine, assuming you still have 19 inch wheels. And they are made in England, too. Whatever you decide to fit should represent a considerable improvement over tyres that were 40 years old Smile. Do let us know how you get on with whatever you choose.

Funny you should recommend those as I was considering them, I am not familiar with the sizes 90/90 front ?, 100/90 Rear ?

I agree with Colin and can recommend the Avon Roadriders too. The sizes are of course now in centimetres and are equivalent to 3.60" Front and 4.10" Rear. Some Commandos are fitted with the larger 4.10" in the front but IMHO with the Roadriders you can feel the benefit of the smaller width?

You might like to look at Conti Classic Attack which have a front & rear fitment (not universal) for 100/90 on 19in - I have them on WM2 front and WM3 rear (Mick Hemmings recommends this set up) on my mk3 - they are a radial tyre and give very good handling - no tramlining and the wobble I had coming down from 45mph to 30mph has gone

Just taken a look at the Conti Classic attack write up, which seems very positive.

I have a 1973 850 and thought that the tyres I took off which were 410 x 19 front and back, are we saying that the standard set up for mine is 3.60 front 4.10 rear?

Or does the bike perform better on 4.10 all round?

I have wm2 rims all round.

Dunlop K81 is tires the gum of which is modern, alone the structure and the drawing were kept, moreover they wear out twice as fast that in the 70s, in fact as Avon. In front 3.60 (or 90) for a better handiness, about is the mark.

After near 30 years of owning my Commando, and a slave to tradition, but never cease to be amazed at how quickly it can knock out a rear TT100 tyre - I too am looking at something different, if that means a better performance from a "newer" tyre.

So, if I can summarise the preceding views;

  1. The TT100 is the original fit, looks the part, but wears out quickly.
  2. The Avon is a newer design (not by that much I would have thought?). Whether they grip better or last longer appears to be a matter of personal opinion?.
  3. Finally we have the Conti Attack, which is the most expensive of the three by some margin but presumably superior in all areas - as you might expect from a modern design and materials?

Is that about the size of it?

You are thinking of the Avon RoadRunner as a contemporary of the TT100. The tyre mentioned above is the Avon RoadRider, which has largely replaced the RoadRunner - this classic tyre is only available now as 80/90/18 and 100/90/19. You can't get a machine pair such as 90/90/19 for the front to go with the 100 rear. If you want a RoadRunner rear, you have to pair it with a Speedmaster.

But you can get a machine set in the RoadRider series

I have always fitted the 4.10/19 on the bike, front and rear - although have once again been aware of opinions regarding a narrower fit on the front. I am assuming the 100/90 is the direct equivalent of the old 4.10 size (although 4.1 x 25.4 is actually 104?)

I am inclined to try the narrower 90/90 on the front in the newer Roadrider series and expect to me amazed on all fronts!

Roadriders are excellent in the dry, bit skitish on wet roads, if you ride all year round, consider the Roadrunner.

life of the Roadrunner used to be better than the Roadrunner, but not much in it these days.

The RoadRunner is now offered only as a 80/90/18 or 100/90/19 - not possible to make a machine pair. If only they still offered the 90/90/19.

Has anyone tried a 300/19 Speedmaster rib tyre with the 100/90/19 RoadRunner?

I'm thinking of new tyres for a featherbed Dominator
