Clutch stack height.

Forums

I have a Commando Mk11A 850. The clutch is heavier than lead. I need to sort out the stack height of the clutch plates. What I need to know is, where and how do I measure from and to? Di I measure from the bottom plate to the top plate or do I include anything else into the equation? There is nothing in the manuals about the subject.

Check the cable run - cables are often bent around in odd ways which impede smooth operation. Fit the latest smooth-running, nylon-lined clutch cable from Andover Norton and buy and insert a 3mm steel inner clutch plate from RGM (substituting this for one of the 2mm standard plates). That will almost certainly improve it. RGM also do a 4mm steel plate if you need greater thickness.

Measuring stack hight wii tell you what you already know, plates are worn!

Question is what to do about it. You need to find out how much end space you have, this can be done with clutch assembled on bike, use spring compressor top pull diaphragm off plates, then push inwards you can then measure gap between circlip and diaphragm with feeler gauges. That is max amount you can take up.

Depending on how much it is there are options you can take

Buy a thicker plain plate

Add an extra plate

Buy a complete new set of friction plates

You can also when dismantled use a micrometer and measure friction plates individually and compare with new spec to see how much is missing.

my personal preference is to use original postage stamp type plates from owners club and flog the bronze type on ebay, choice is yours, but check thickness of what you buy with what you have, or you may need a different thickness of pressure plate too

Had a look at the plates today. Stack height is spot on for the 850. I fitted new Hi torque plates last year. Cured all the clutch slipping grief I've had for the past thirty years. It has always been tough as hell to pull in the clutch lever. I have tried new cables before but, I may just give it another go. I have read about the actuating lever where the cable goes on to can be a problem. Has anyone had experience with this? It is also very snatchy on the clutch pulling away, and always has been fierce. This is the last thing I really need to sort as most other things.... so far are sorted.

I have replaced worn arm before and it did improve things even though the ware looked minimal. It is also possible you have the wrong arm as there are a few different profiles as gearbox was used on different makes aswell as different models. Alignment of the cable to the arm is also worth checking if you haven't already.

After a fine tuning of my clutch it is the lightest one I or any of my non Commando riding (yes i know i shouldn't hang around with such foke but its always my bike that gets the looks never theirs) have used. It does bit fairly quickly but you get used to it quickly to an its dry primary belt drive so that may help it bit.
