Back to the original colour

Forums

Hello All,

I have a v.early Roadster (02.70 #135xxx) for which I have a new steel tank, having finally given up trying to keep our nasty modern fuel in the original fibreglass version - now only fit for decoration.

I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good, trustworthy painter in the S.W. of England?

Secondly, since I plan to revert to the original black, if this should just have the Norton logo (just in Gold or also outlined?) or would it also have had the D-shaped pinstripes? I am pretty sure this would have been the case by 1971/72 but how did they leave the factory at the very beginning of 1970? Maybe even optional?

Thanks for any input on this - greatly appreciated

Regards Phil

I've seen some great jobs by them on Triumph Tridents, and have no doubt they would do an equally great job on a Norton.

As David says above, Roy Bacon book has the following:

1970 Colours of signal red, canary yellow or British racing green as solid and in fireflake as royal blue, emerald, bronze or silver for petrol tanks of all models and side covers of S and Roadster. Black is not mentioned. The 'D' gold pinstripe on the black tank appeared in 1971 and 1972.

The brochure referred to by David shows a Roadster in emerald fireflake see http://classicbike.biz/Norton/Brochures/1970/70Norton.pdf and unhelpfully includes under 'Colors' Wide range of colors available. Consult your dealer.

An advert from 1970 has a Roadster in canary yellow: http://classicbike.biz/Norton/A_Link/1970s/70Roadster-Ad.pdf

How do you know what the original colour of your bike was?

Thanks a million for your responses guys - that is super helpful!

The bike is currently in Signal Red, which does look good but is not original and was chosen by the previous (dealer) owner for its âsaleabilityâ having reimported it from Canada - otherwise it appears almost untouched.

Reg. documentation and traces on the inside of both sidecovers indicate it was previously black which I assumed, possibly incorrectly, was original.

Thanks Andy! At least the issue with the pinstriping and outlined Norton logo seems pretty clear now for the MY 1970.

Rgds Phil
