Navigator Clutch Spider.

Forums

Hi. I purchased my Navigator last year and disccovered a problem straight away that makes it unrideable. The spider in my clutch has been badly damaged by a previous owner and is beyond repair. My bike is a 1961 model and has the 11/16ths shaft. I've contacted all the Norton parts dealers and no one can supply one, and my search for a second hand one is proving fruitless.  Is there one off another model or manufacturer that would fit, or can the internals be swapped over as a straight swap from a later bike?  Any help or assistance with this would be greatly appreciated as the bike can't be ridden as it is. Thank you in anticipation. Phil

Phil,

Some of the lightweight 250 single AJS and Matchless lightweights used the same clutch as your Navigator. AMC used the same part number for identical components in the AMC range of bikes.
You may find the part number you want listed in AMOC spares. It won't be cheap if they have had some made.
Up to you to decide if the spend is worth the difference between runner or non-runner.

Recently there was another thread on lightweight clutch centres, and at the time I found an unused NOS stock centre as you need. Google "Norton + part number". Or just "part number". About £250.

Hi, Just had a reply, this one is for the 3/4" shaft, late version. Another coming soon from same seller is for 5/8" shaft, early Jubilee.

Can I ask how the spider has failed?   Not a common failure but never the less it happens.
I'm asking to see if there is a common mode of failure and what can be done to prevent it and fix it.

Presently there are 3, possibly 4, complete clutches on eBay, at reasonable prices.  Would be worth taking a chance?

Hi. Not a mechanical failure. A previous owners over zealous use of a hammer and has damaged the threads and bent one of the arms, (can't think why it would need to have been hit how it has been, but that's joys of following someone of this calibre), so when the unit is in situe the whole units spins out of true, therefore making the chain go from lose to tight. To change the whole unit, I would have to change some or all of the gearbox internals. The ones on Ebay are all of a different size, mine appears to be the rare one.  I have messaged the Matchless owners club to see if they have my size, currently awaiting a reply.

Failures i have seen with Dommy spiders are, fractured paddles and crumbling registers (stops) where the shaft nut mounts . This can allow the whole clutch assembly to migrate towards the gearbox and grind against the sleeve gear end . Usually presenting itself when a puller has to be used . A substantial close fitting plain  washer under the nut (as fitted to the earlier Norton Burman clutch ) helps to support the spider stop  and IS the stop on the early clutches. Hard grinding contact between spider and sleeve gear will not improve gear selection .
