Hi. My Navigator gearbox had all the usual leaks when I purchased the bike. I have now cured all the leaks except the kick starter shaft. I replaced the original o ring set up with a square section seal, but it's still leaking badly. Are there any recommendations as to stop this leak. Thank you

Hi Peter. Thank you for…
Hi Peter.
Thank you for the reply. It's a 1961, and the screws are horizontal.

Seal on shaft
Phil,
This picture shows the shaft and seal on an early lightweight kick-start shaft. The seal position is fixed on the shaft. The shaft is fixed in position by the hardware behind the return spring.
So does yours look like this?

Seal housing on gearbox outer cover
Phil,
This is the outer cover looking up the kick-start shaft plain bearing.
The o-ring is supposed to end up a tight fit in the last annular space at the end of this view. Watch the x ring type don't get twisted.
Some housings get damaged here and the o-ring does not stand a chance of sealing if the aluminium feature is butchered or severely scratched.
The 'squash' of the ring is a function of how far the output shaft is inside the cover when everything is assembled.
All a bit of a weak design depending on tolerance control.
If your hardware looks OK and still leaks, a metric ring, or ring with slightly larger section, might work for you. Have seen a suggestion the ring can be blathered with silicone sealer at installation to improve things. Doubt that would work here.

Hi Philip,
Can you tell us whether this is the early lightweight gearbox or the late lightweight gearbox?
Inspection/fill cover screws on the horizontal or the vertical?
