Can anyone tell me what the cable adjuster thread is on '50s Norton main control cables?
I have just tried fitting a new Venhill front brake cable to my '55 Dominator, bought from RGM.
The brake cable adjuster is the wrong thread - it will fit a '57-on all alloy front brake plate, but not the pre-'57 brake plate on my bike.
When I bought if, I told them it was for a '55 Dominator 88, and bought a clutch cable at the same time, for a horizontal / laydown box.
It gives me no confidence that the adjuster on the clutch cable is correct, or that it will be the right length. I will be able to check the adjuster on my brake plate, but not the length without taking the existing cable off, and losing the careful adjustment. Hey ho.
They are both cycle thread. Later ones are BSF. Venhill do a brake cable with a cycle thread adjuster as I have one on my ES2, but they don't do a clutch cable for a Laydown box. I bought the bits from Venhill to make a cable for the clutch on my Laydown gearbox. Although their cycle thread adjuster was so tight in the gearbox that I didn't use it and cut one off an old cable.
I know my new brake cable is a Venhill, but haven't checked the clutch one. Both from RGM. It was sold to me specifically as being for laydown box on featherbed.
Try Johnson Cables, as Dave who now runs this company is a place to go
... at least on the gearbox and I'm pretty sure on the front brake as well. Venhill actually supply a cycle thread adjuster: https://www.venhill.co.uk/cables-amp-components/fittings-amp-components/adjusters/steel-adjuster-screw-516-bsc-x-1-three-eighth-inch-a31137c.html although it would have been nicer with a knurled finger adjuster rather than the hexagon.
I have one on the (self-made) clutch cable on my ES2 and it works fine.
Today I checked the cable adjuster tpi, which was 26, and then tried the brake cable in a couple of Norton brake plates, It went into the post-'57, and also the pre-'57. Both were much looser than the cable stop on my bike. It turned out to be a little bur on the end of the adjuster screw, which was easily cleaned off, It was a tightish fit, but the cable is fitted
The clutch cable adjuster is 26 tpi as well.
