Rubber backing for round tank badges

Forums

Hello All

I have a '57 ES2, the fuel tank (pre-featherbed) the type that has chrome plated side panels with stuck on knee grips.

The round tank badges should sit 'in' thin rubber backings, which are moulded to wrap slightly around the edge of the badge, but all the rubbers I've seen are a thick plain circular type which is wrong.

Does anyone have the correct P/No. or know a supplier please?

Thanks for any help.

I made mine out of thicker rubber because my chrome panels came off an AJS (The 57/58 singles and the 77 were a stop gap lash up) I just had to make new holes to suit the larger Norton round badge secured with the 4BA screws. Original Norton chrome panels have a recess for the tank badge and so I doubt a backing will be as necessary. No recess on mine, hence thick rubber.

With regret, there is more support from other members for these models than the club or main suppliers.

Hi Brian,

My 57 M77 has the correct chrome panels & badges, and while restoring, I was never able to see what was "correct". A local dealer had some NOS foam backing pads from AMC that were around 1/4" thick & slightly larger diameter than my badges. When tightened down, they ever so slightly wrapped around the edge of the badge. I do not know if that is correct, but it looks very nice.

I purchased my correct knee rubbers & rubber beading for the chrome panels & rear license plate bracket from AMC Classic spares. I know they sell several types of the tank badge backing rubber, you might give them a try.
