31 lucas mag magnet ?

Forums

I would like to use the original Mag on my 31 model 20.The problem was, back in the late 1980's we had the magnet recharged several times, each time after 4 days it went dead.

Surely I'm not alone with this problem, does anyone produce these old Horseshoe magnets?

It would be a shame if the original mag is just a show piece.

Hi Ian, I'm no mag man but I do recall that in the mid 30's they changed the magnet steel composition for something better (Alnico?)with a longer life. I also think that the re-magnetisation had to be the complete assembled mag and that a strip down always needed a re-do after. Different magnet shapes had different process too, perhaps your magman is not the expert he thinks he is?? or maybe like me he's just too old!!.

I totally agree that it would be a shame to abandon a useable item.

There seem to be a number places that offer to work on more or less elderly magnetos:

Armoto

The Magneto Guys

Brightspark Magnetos

Dave Lindsley

and no doubt others; the interweb is your friend ...

Good luck!

Tony, not sure how I missed the Mag section in the Tech area..lol

I'll drop Paul an E mail and see what he thinks.

Just might be the original guy who charged the magnet did it wrong

Thanks

Hi Ian.I have sent you an email explaining what i think is wrong and you will need the magnetisem checking with a gauss meter when remagnetised and checked again after a few days when the mag fails and compere the readings but i suspect the coil is faulty as i have never had a magnet lose its magnetisem after a few days (but there is always the first time}.If i can help you any more please get in touch. Thanks Paul Wolf Magneto Tec
