Steve, Its best to replace…
Steve,
Its best to replace the grill with a solid plate or cover the grill. Road dirt, waterand dieselwill enter the brake through the grill and make the shoes ineffective and ruin the brake material.

On my Commando the front gauze filter grill was held in place by what looked like 6 small screws. These of course broke when I tried to remove them so I just drilled them out and replaced them with similar sized rivets my local DIY shop were selling. However, I do believe that these parts and the grill plate are available from Andover Norton.
You need part nos 060 0020 or 06 0021 plus the rivets/screws.
