Thank you to all who commented on my request for help .The layshaft bearing had collapsed , it had been replaced before by a previous owner who had used a roller bearing , the housing must have been damaged because he had punched all round the diameter to hold the bearing in . As a result of the collapse the shell is cracked where the balls have punched through , that explains the oil leak !
Time for some hard thinking !
