Rearset for 1972 Commando

Forums

Hi everyone,

Finally back after a quality summer of riding, and want to now improve my ride.

I've been reading and looking into rearset for the commando. As I find it straining on my hips after a long ride on the ride position on both Interstate and Roadster setup.

I also imagine having rearset would be much better on those Twisties which is plentiful here near Dresden.

Some say Norvil rearset is good, some say don't go near them... But for the price, is it that bad/good?

I've seen CNW with a bullet set, which cost nearly 1200eu shipped to Germany...

Anyone with an update opinion on Norvil (or other producer) parts would be appreciated. As I don't really want to pay 1200eu...

Cheers.

Rich.

RGM sell components for rearsets so you can make your own copies of the CNW, send me an email and I can give details.

Hi Richard,

I fitted Norman Hyde rearsets years ago and ive always found them really comfortable, unfortunately they are not made anymore so you would have to find a secondhand set (mine were second user items over 20 years ago).

Kind regards,

Ian

I made my own. But first you have to decide where do you want your feet?

Easyest way is to get some ply wood and make some plates to mount where the foot rests mounted on the three holes in Z plates using longer screws and washers to space them out and then use pillion foot rests bolted to the ply to try out different positions.

Having got the position right yoiu can then go from there. I made my own reverse gear lever out of one got from ebay for £23. The splines were not right ( as stated by Andover Norton and it was longer than standard) but careful use of a needle file and engineers blue and careful bending took care of that.

I have used RGM stainless pillion footrests with main ridder rubbers on. and brake lever simialar to Norvil ones off of ebay.

RGM do the splined levers for use with up and over gearchanges for standard gearchange direction.

Norvil offer a range of parts.

Andover Norton have Proddy Racer parts (Norvil) Gear lever(revers action) Brake lever and cable. Kickstart only short of footrests but you could probably use Pillion ones.

Type in Norton Commando rearsets on ebay there is a good set for sale currently at £77.

Sorry my phone would not paste the number.

Thanks for the feed back everyone.

I've looked into all options, and into the eBay link, found it, and might drop a bid.

I'm waiting for john to send me his opinion and options to weight in and see what I'll do.

But after a 4 hour ride the other day on the interstate set up, I really feel the bike could do with some rearset for those lovely Twisties as well for comfort.

I can imagine the rearset setup would be better suited for the roadster tank? As the tank is shorter and pushes the rider forward a little and can lean forward more with the rearset?

Either way, it's an hour job most to change the tank etc for looks. I just want my regular ride to be more comfortable and handle better.

Hi,

I sourced some of these.

Delivery from the Philippines was veryquick and Don Pender (an American, well respected by US Norton owners) is a pleasure to deal with and the products first rate. My set was somewhat cheaper than these as they were supplied without the linkage as I use a reversed lever. I use them with a Roadster tank.
