I have a 1955 ES2 which seems to have a flanged mag mounting on the cases, what is the right magdynamo for this model?

As I have only just bought the bike I'm not sure what is standard, at the moment it has a plate mounted mag, possibly with the Dynamo mounting removed - it's a 55 pre featherbed in trials trim at the moment with no lights, looking at the timing case it has 3 threaded holes which makes me think it had a flange mounted mag, but I couldn't see a flange mounted mag Dynamo? I assume the MO1L just mounts on the plate?
Will post pics later

Sounds like you have a coil ignition timing case. John

Hi Dan
Seems to me from your message that you have a distributor type timing cover that someone has fitted a three bolt flange type magneto as fitted to velocette and vincent comet an es2 from would have a lucas m01 mag dyno sitting on a platform clamped between the engine plates
the 500t models had a BTH TT competion mag and no dynamo i hope this helps

Hi Dan,
Now I understand what you mean. I thing Roger is dead on about the later timing case, and as stated that later style case used a flage mounted distributor, which is the same bolt pattern as the flage mounted Lucas & BT-H magnetos. If you want to have lights (other than a total loss set-up) it seems you will be on the lookout for an earlier timing case.

This is best pic I have at the moment, I'm confident that the mag is an MO1lL that has been cut down. You can see the flange mounting hole on the timing case. Is there any reason why a standard MO1L mag Dynamo won't fit given that I have the mounting platforms?

Hi Dan,
great pic! You are absolutely correct, it is (was) an MO1 magdyno, sans dyno
Here is another example of the same trick:
You shouldnt have too much trouble finding an MO1 body in the UK, but should you have trouble, email me, I have 20-30 emplty MO1 castings.I would think you should be fine mounting it up.

Just out of interest if I keep it without lights will a K1F mag bolt up? Are the shaft sizes the same?

Hi Dan,
Do you have a different flage than standard? do you have pictures? otherwiseyou need a MO1L magdyno with the Long 60 watt dynamo.
Lucas number 46047 covers '48-'57 ES2's & would turn anti-clockwise (as viewed from the DRIVE end, RH spring for the advance, LH pick-up.
See page 40 for the brand/model ref., page G29 for the specs on the mag.
