Base Gasket

Forums

Afternoon.  Would it be safe to assume that a cylinder base gasket for a 1948-on M18 would fit a 1947 bike?  I'm hoping that the only change was the addition of oil holes from '48.  Thank you.

Hi Philip,

Sorry I didn't see your post last week. Yes you should be O.K. using the later gasket as the cylinder sleeve and the stud centres are the same on both engines, it's just the flange shape that may be different but most gaskets are straight sided anyway. Use a non-setting sealer on both faces, but don't use a head gasket. Use the double ground method again with a thin coat of sealer.

P.S. Have you got your little end bush done yet ? Don't have the tolerance too tight, that causes most of the problems.

Thanks Richard.  Appreciated.

No the engine is with Hamlins in Bridgwater, I'll get the base gasket posted over to them and then give them a bell to see how the Bush is coming along.  Looks like I'll have plenty of weekends at home to get it all put back together ....
