Were all Factory Mag's Lucas, Post War?

I had a chat with Roger @ RGM this afternoon. He has taken off every original mag sprocket he could find and will re-make them for our benefit. (Another job less for the spares scheme)

What Roger did find was that any fitted to BTH mags were modified, not always a good job either.

Now we all know that bits get swapped about but can anyone confirm if, post war, that anything other than a Lucas mag was fitted by the factory?

How where they modified Neil?

There where industry standards and Lucas and BTH should have the same taper, centre height and offset from the mounting flange or studs. You should be able to swap them over without needing to modify anything.

In answer to your original question, I believe Manxs where fitted with BTH TT mags for a few years after the war.

I, too, was under the impression that the sprockets/gears were interchangeable between Lucas and BTH mags. I have checked in my 1946-49 parts list and for the manx 30M and 40M gives part no. A11/112 as Magneto (BTH) or magdyno sprocket. No alternative sprocket is listed for the 500T. I have changed between BTH KD1 and magdyno using the same sprocket and have not noticed anything wrong.

Andy/ Rod, interesting. Today, RGM now tell me that all competition models used BTH mags. What has thrown Roger out is that his BTH example had the back of the taper ground down. He was looking to find the reason for it. We have all seen butchered (No offence to Butchers) parts and it looks like this is another.

I'm satisfied that the sprockets are the same, be it 15 teeth and the final 16 tooth version. Thanks gents.

The only question remaining is the production years of the 14 tooth mag sprocket?

Just had an update from RGM. They confirm that competition MAGs had a different spec and a different part number.
