Top fork nut

Forums

Hi .

Just wondering if anyone has any tips for removing what appears to be a threaded top fork nut on my 65 Atlas . I am currently stripping it down for a restoration , but am a bit stuck with this nut . It is very very tight , and can be turned only with a long extention bar. I got the other side off easy enough , but this one is turning ( with lots of pressure ) but not coming undone .

I thought i would just leave it for now , and see if anyone has experienced the same issue , or if anyone has any tips before i continue on .

Thanks .

Hi Dave,

It seems to me like the fork stanchion is also turning. Check that the pinch bolt at the rear of the bottom fork yolk on that side is tight to prevent the stanchion from turning. If that does not work then dismantle the fork leg without removing from the fork yolk it to gain access to the stanchion to prevent it from turning,

Good luck, Rob.

If the leg is turning the nut can sometimes be "surprised" into moving by a sharp rap with a hammer on a well fitting spanner ,Its not a size that many would have, but after years of collecting I have just about everything.

Good idea from Rob, I agree that it is likely that the stanchion is turning. More gloomily, a couple of times I've found a leg with the nut cross threaded. If so it is likely to be tight most of the way out.

Thankyou all for the tips ( will try that out when i get a chance and post results ) .

So nice to be able to get some advice .

Thanks again

This is my first british bike , and the one that stole my heart about 20 odd years earlier . I don't quite know what it was but the Norton ( especially the Atlas ) just grabbed me . I am in Australia and don't have any friends that share my interest in Nortons ( or motorcycles for that matter ) so being able to ask advice , or just browse the forum means the world to me .

Thanks again

Thanks Robert , Robert , and Alan . As suggested i tightened the pinch bolt ( twas pretty tight already ) and soaked the nut in penetrine , and sprayed releasing agent into it . After letting it soak , and a few solid taps it started to turn and free up .

Thanks again

Hello my advice is to remove the alloy leg by the station sealing ring its the chrome ring it should have round hole in to fit a C spanner take this of and the knock out the bronze bush and seal let go of the bottom then you can get some big grip on the bottom of the stantion you need to heat up the top nut so it expanses then try turning it . you may need some helpers for this but if you have your head lamp still on, I would remove it before trying out any heat treatment and shield anything thing else around there too and try not to burn your self or anyone else, or anything else, take care and have someone round to help. do not try this on your own, think safety first, Yours Anna J Dixon PS my cousin are out there somewhere, all 28 of them,

I have managed to get it off after soaking in releasing agent , and as suggested by two Roberts to re tension the pinch stud on lower fork clamp . The nut was already quite rounded so i used a large stilson to get it out . I wasn't worried about damaging the actual nut as it was in pretty poor shape , and will be replaced anyway .

Thanks for the advice , i am sure we will speak again : )

Hi Dave i am in QLD and have a keen interest in Nortons (mainly commando)give me a ring .Steve 07 41934271

Hi Steve . I am in Mandurah W.A . I think that's around 3,500 kms away . I got my Atlas from victoria from Classic styles ( a motorcycle importer ) . I bought it sight unseen ( apart from photos ) but she was mostly complete , and had good compression . I was surpised when after a quick check over , and service she fired into life . I have been doing road tests for a little while and got her roadworthy and registered , and am now pilling her down for restoration .

Really looking forward to having her back on the road as i just love it !!!

I have had many bikes over the years but always loved the Norton Atlas . I am very very thankful to have been able to get one .

My circle of friends are all in music , so trying to talk Nortons is bit of a battle . I bought my drummer a Norton t shirt ( just to make him a little more interesting ) however , he is a poor substitute for a person bitten by the Norton bug .

Will talk soon Steve

Thanks for your post
