Timing cover fitting issue

Forums

hi everyone

has anybody had trouble getting a nice fit with the timing cover on a 99 dommie, when i fit mine i am left with a gap at the bottom, maybe 2 or 3mm,the only improvement is if i remove the conical rubber seal on the oil pump, even then i still have a gap, wondering if i have a different pump, although i assumed that the oil pumps were pretty standard within the norton range.

i look forward to your thoughts on this.....

many thanks .pete

Have you checked to see if the cover is warped? Place it on a surface plate or glass and check it with feeler gauges or it may be very evident.

Peter,

There should only be a thin gasket between the pump and crankcase.

The end of the crankshaft goes into the cover via a lip seal check that the seal is in good order and there is nothing else in the cover in way to stop the crankshaft fully entering the cover.

The half time pinion shaft sometimes comes out if not a good fit in the crankcase, check that it is fully pushed home in the crankcase.

Have you had the engine stripped down by any chance??

If you can let us know what you find.

hi tony,

even without the seal in place the cover will not seat properly against the crankcase half, the only improvement is if i dont fit the oil pump seal,

the half time pinion shaft is fully home, the engine was stripped and is now going through rebuilding,i never had any reason for concern when i stripped the engine, there was nothing un toward!

many thanks

Peter,

Remove the oil pump and try the cover, if it fits OK then you will know where the problem lies, it would be worth checking the thickness of the gasket between pump and crankcase anyway.

Whatever you find I would be interested in what it is.

Tony
