Throttle splitter or twin pull?

Forums

Hi all I'm just about to rebuild my 88 cafe racer with twin carbs I have a throttle 2-1 splitter and a twin pull twistgrip that came with the bike I'm wondering what is the best to use, has anyone out there got any opinions on using one or the other.

thanks Simon

I have recently removed the splitter and fitted the original twin pull cable set up on a twin carburettor bike.Surprisingly, using Venhill cables with the adjusters close to the twist grip, the pull is very light, while affording easy individual balancing adjustment of theslide height adjustment. I should have fitted this set up sooner.

Interesting; I had the opposite reaction to Paul. I found the two cablesout to thehandlebar did not always havethesamelosses whenthesteering was rotated giving mea lumpyidle. I admitto having the throttle stops"cracking" on a knife edge. Tohelp withvariableidlingIput a Commando splitter set up on there butalso a Quick actiongrip which wouldbeclearlynot aslight asPaul's setup. If your cable management is good and you aremeticulous withtheadjustment twocableswill be fine, but keepmoving thesteering to ensure youdon'tloosesync.

I've had both. Twin is a problem with the turning and the revs altering sometimes. but with a well set up cables it is not a major problem, but less is more. To gey a smoooooth action grease the slides with graphite grease and lube the cables with GT85 or some other graphite or teflon based light oil. Available at you local pushbike shop.

I would think that if the cables are effected by the steering being turned, that they are too short or need re-routing around the head stem.

We tried the Venhill kit with plastic junction box.

Didn't like the quality of the box (although their cables are brilliant) so started looking into the heavier chromed boxes... whilst looking, stumbled over the new Amal twin pull.

It's a bit pricey, but feels lovely!

I've run Tommaselli twin-pulls for years on Commandos. I recall being told off by John Hudson about them as in theory they shouldn't be as good.

In practice, the junction boxes always seem to wear and bind, no matter how well lubricated.

Something better thought out than a rounded form within a tube would seem to be called for and the junction box should have a fixed location.

The Trident had a decent linked system of course but I don' t think most Nortons have enough room.
