Spring 'as sprung

Forums

Just trying to fit a new centre stand spring, the old one was lost when the stand fractured &I'm not sure which end goes where!

I havecool new stainless spring from RGM &I am assuming that the right angled 'ook goes into the 'ole in the frame just above the pivot on the nearside, and the smaller more 'c' shaped 'ook goes underneath the stand cross piece & up into the hole drilled therein (see jpg) Or is it the other way around - though this would look a little awkward (so may be perversely correct!)

Yes that is the correct way round. I have recently fitted one of these and to enable me to do this I had to lay down on the ground, gripping the lower end of the spring with a decent pair of mole grips and then using a straight arm pull you can easily hook the end of the spring into the stand. Don,t worry if the spring rubs a little on one of the stand bolts, it won't affect how it works. On another topic did you see my solution to the SU carb cable angle problem I posted on the Accessnorton website.

Cheers Peter, have been stuffing pegs in to open the spring, but they get in the way! Will try mole grips/cable tie and the 'straight pull'

Hmm, I must have missed the SU fix, I notuced the thread jumped - I might have been distracted by work ;) . I wouldn't refit an SU without finding a solution to the risk of fraying cables! (maybe you could post a link to me directly?)

Cheers, Mike.

The only way I can manage this is to unbolt the stand, fit the spring to stand and cradle and with the stand about horizontal pull back and get a large screwdriver/drift etc. in one hole. Hold it there and the stand will pivot round to get one bolt and spacer in. Bike has to be on sidestand of course and probably in gear to stop movement. It works well for me anyway.

A standard way to fit the spring is put one end in the vice and push it to one side. Fit an old penny in the gap in the lowest coil (the penny must be age related or it does not work). Now push the spring across the other way and fit another penny. continue until all coil both sides have pennies in the gaps. The spring will now be long enough to fit on with the centre stand in the up position without any pulling.

Then put the bike on the stand and all the pennies fall out.

Hi Peter,

There are no rules against you posting the solution here as well.

I suggest a new thread though as it makes it easier to search for.
