Slimline petrol cap location

Some slimlinepetrol tanks have their filler caps left of centre and others on the right hand side. I have examples of both.

I thought I'd ask the question why, while there might still be someone alive who knew the reason, if indeed there was a reason for the different locations on what are otherwise identical tanks?

I'm asking before it becomes a question like: Whatdoes ES2stand for?

Hi Neil,

I don't think the tanks are otherwise identical.

There are at least three different types, not counting the small American market one. The first Slimline tank has a left hand filler and small radius corners on the front edge, which are very prone to chafing on the frame rails and then leaking, this was changed sometime before the move to Plumstead to another left-hand filler tank with larger radius curves on the front edge, this one is quite rare and may only have been made a few months.

Then at around the time of the move, probably immediately after, another larger radius ( but not quite the same) tank came out with a right-hand filler neck, this is the most common one and seems to have lasted then until 1970. I have been told that it was to suit export markets where people would pull up with a fuel pump on their right hand side, so as to avoid spillage across the tank top and having to bend the hose to getthe nozzlein the tank.

This is just an answer I was given when I asked the same question years ago, the other stuff is based on my own observations of fairly original looking bikes I have had over the years.
