Slimeline ES2 3 stud Brake drum/chain sprocket

Forums

One of the three studs that attach the brake drum to the rest of the hub has broken free of its weld in the drum. This means that the sleeve nut can not be undone and the QD function for wheel removal has ceased to be an option. The same thing has happened on a Dominator. Is there a simple fix for this??

I'm pretty sure mine isn't welded, its punched to stop it turning. If you take the whole wheel off you should be able to see from inside the drum?

I took the whole wheel to a friend who brazed the 3 studs to the brake drum. They had been crudely peened over on the inside of the drum.

Comparing the offending drum to two worn out examples showed that there are at least 3 methods of securing the studs. The first as described above. The second seemed to be peened in a press leaving uniform serrations round each stud. The third way seemed to be to deeply dimple the stud and press the surrounding metal to the drum.

Only the ones with crude peening seem to give way.

The method of attachment of the studs is seldom shown on adverts for replacement brake drums as they are usually shown with the studs uppermost.
