A SILLY BUT USEFUL TIP FOR ALL FEATHERBED STANDS

Dear Members,

Whilst replacing the main bearings in my ‘60 ES2, necessitating removal of the complete engine/gearbox/plates assembly I noticed that my centre stand was worn slightly curved at the point where it touched the lower rear frame tube. Fortunately the tube was undamaged.

To alleviate any future wear on the stand legs and potentially the frame tubing I attached a large cable tie around each of the legs where it impacted the frame.

Silly tip but one that can easily be replaced every now and then with minimum expenditure and maximum effectiveness,

Photos attached.

Being in the racing circus, cable ties, duct tape. electrical tape and lock wire are the things that keep you going. Though it might be worth contemplating fitting the tie on the frame tube instead, minimizing frame wear. If ever, heaven forbid, your bike ends up in a museum, the cable ties can be easily removed.

I use a short (1 inch?) length of rubber hose with the appropriate ID, slit lengthways and wrapped around the frame tube. It can be lightly glued if necessary.

Or do the same with a length of 'cable tidy', which is plastic tube cut spirally.
