Re: How can I tell what Norton my girder forks are from?

Forums

I have recently purchased an early 30's Norton Inter project. I know it's a bit of a mixture parts, the frame appears to be 1932 road going inter and the engine a 1936 racing inter. I am however a bit stuck as to what the forks are. Origonally we assumed they where Inter, but it has since been mentioned that they may be from a 16H. Is there any easy way to know what they are from? I will upload some close up pictures of the forks later, but here is a picture of the bike (well, what I have of it). As you can see, I have a lot of bits to find and do. So I will probably be on here asking more questions as time goes by.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!

It looks as if the brake lug is on the right hand side so if they're not Inter (are they too wide ?)then they must be from either 1939 or 1946 production (the only years that the sv and ohv machines didn't have the brake on the left). The lamp bracket fittings differed for 1946.

Norton forks were numbered on the front of the lower cross-tube. The club should be able to check the number in the factory records database and tell you exactly what they were originally fitted to.

The only records that are missing to any degree are for wartime production and if the brake is on the right then these certainly aren't that.

If I'm reading the extracts that I have correctly, any number lower than about 73000 should be pre-war.

Close up photos will help of course.

Thanks again for that information, knowing where to look for numbers makes it a much quicker process!! The number on the forks is 68140 so this would tie in as a pre-war set of forks.

As for the width of them, we only have one set of forks and no hubs yet. Does anybody know what the width of the hub should be?

I am going to take some pictures and send them off to get the factory records for the frame and engine so hopefully if I include fork numbers the NOC may be able to shed some light on them as well. But any information as to widths of hubs would be usefull. I dont mind if they arent inter forks but it sounds like I will need to go looking for a different front hub.
