Re-fitting electric start

Forums

Hi

I am new to owning a classic Norton and need some help. I purchased a 1976 Commando Mk 3 last year which had been fitted with a belt drive system and had the electric starter and internal sprag clutch etc removed. I have decided I would like to refit the parts to bring it back to an electric start, while retaining the belt drive system if possible?. From reading the various messages posted about this subject I can't find confirmation that this can be done?

I understand the issue is around the sprag clutch needing to be run in oil, which drive belts don't like, so has anybody overcome this problem and if so how.

Any advice would be appreciated

Apart from lubrication, the belt drive crankshaft pully will need to be machined for the sprag clutch and be of the right material and hardness to stand the sprags engaging. I fitted the electric start on mine last year but it had the standard primary drive.

I have other pictures but the 'add another attachment' link simply opens another message window.
