Quick tool question

Forums

I'm in the process of stripping the top end off my 850 Commando and hit a snag in getting the cylinder head off â my trusty old box spanner that fits the three nuts accessed via holes in the top fins between the exhaust rocker covers has finally given up the ghost. Not being very tool-savvy, and not having a British-bike-friendly tool shop anywhere nearby any more, I'll have to order what I need online â but I'd be extremely grateful for suggestions of what to get, and where online to order it. The box spanner doesn't have any size markings, and it's so knackered now that I wouldn't want to guess what size it's supposed to be â? TIA! p.s. The engine's in the bike, so I'll need kit that will fit in that space.

3/8" square drive 1/4 whitworth socket and a short 3/8" extension will do the trick. Koken brand are very good quality. source them off ebay.

Right, I have bought a 2nd-hand, 3" long 3/8" drive extension by King Dick from someone on eBay, ex-MOD allegedly. And, rummaging deeper than usual into my Obliviarium, I was amazed to find a 1/4 Whitworth, 3/8" drive socket by Kennedy, of whom I haven't otherwise heard â but the longer I stared at it in my confusion, the more sure I became that I bought it from Angie Hemmings many moons ago, for just this job â?! It's very clean but has clearly been used at least once, but that head hasn't been off since, ooh, 2000?! Unfortunately I didn't find a suitable extension, hence the eBay purchase. Thanks for the tips folks!

A bit of duct tape will stop the socket coming off and being a sod to retrieve.

Thanks Robert, dropping things in there irretrievably had been bothering me! Another good tip, cheers. Smile

I use hmp grease to temporarily stick the washer to the nuts / centre bolt then to stick the nuts and bolt head into the 3/8 drive 1/4 Whit socket. Not dropped one yet!
