Oil Filter Kits ?

Forums

For 1959 Model 50 - Andover Norton and RGM Norton both sell external cartridge Oil Filter Kits. One is almost twice the price of the other. Are they different ? Is one better than the other ? Where do they fit ? Are there any more suitable kits available ? I assume this is a worthwhile modification, or am I being over concerned on this issue ? All opinions and advice welcome.

I use a Hi de hi oil filter kit on two of my ES2 Nortons, a T90 and a T100. They are about 8" long and 1 1/2" wide. They are not so bulky as the Commando spin on type and use a filter from a T150 / 160 Trident. You may need to make a "P" clamp of sorts to mount them or, like I did on my T100 made a very nice alloy clamping bracket.

As far as filtering goes, if it works for a Trident it is plenty good enough for an ES2 normally used without any filter system at all.

They advertise in Old Bike Mart, or google it.

I think any filter is better than none, although you could just change the oil more often! I have a RGM kit on my jubilee but itâs a bit bulky, I saw a neat Morgo kit at the weekend on a highly tuned Triumph scrambles bike, the engine was in a maico frame with Kim gearbox and was beating stuff built in the mid eighties! Anyway that had a Morgo kit, which is about half the size. I think this is it but havent made any further enquiries yet. http://www.morgo.co.uk/15-morgo-oil-filter-kit

+1 , adding an oil filter in the return can only do good, if the pump then has issues returning the oil then its the pump that needs looking at first. I saw a filter added to a B40 once and the oil return stopped, the oil pump had clearances you could swim through, after a pump refurb all worked as planned.

Golly yes that is compact! The later WD B40GB came with an external oil filter, I think just a bit smaller than that. Made by some well-known UK filter manufacturer, but not so well-known that I can remember who ... I've got one somewhere ...

well when you you find it you can let us know! Edit .... Vokes? https://www.google.co.uk/search?client=safari&channel=iphone_bm&dcr=0&source=hp&ei=ddDyWZXRCYPPwQKvj6ioDw&q=bsa+b40+wd+oil+filter&oq=wd+b40+oil+&gs_l=mobile-gws-hp.1.0.0i22i30k1.2544.13807.0.15521.13.12.1.1.1.0.223.2137.0j5j6.11.0....0...1.1.64.mobile-gws-hp..1.12.1945.3..0j5j35i39k1j0i131k1j0i22i10i30k1.124.Pn6s__7fw4E#imgrc=ofD9WaRyNr7PZM:

Yes Vokes that's it! I remember MCS on Leytonstone High Road had a stock of the filters, plus other parts for that bike, are they still there? http://d121tcdkpp02p4.cloudfront.net/clim/126225/engine-number-edited.JPG

Edit: Although according to this thread the later WD B40s used filters by British Filters Ltd â strange, I have a later WD B40 and a Vokes filter â but it's all in boxes in the loft and it's been so long since I looked that I couldn't tell you which is correct. Sorry, not much use am I! Unless it leads you to something useful ...!

Edit: Unless anyone knows different, it looks like MCS has long gone â the only similar listing is for British Only at the same address (214â218 High Road, Leytonstone), which Google street view shows to be vacant ... Shame. If they're gone, I wonder who bought their stock ...

Depends on what you term as later, the British Filter was used for the B25 71/72 OIF and any B40WD being made then would have had them fitted.

Well by 'later', for British Filters, the poster at the Hitchcocks forum means from 1965! My suspicion is that's wrong, but ... Whether you can still (?)get any of the Vokes stuff, according to http://www.bsawdb40.com/Useful-Links 'Mark and Ian [at C and D Autos] are big supporters of my collection', it might be worth giving them a call? If they're still around, that is. I remember seeing their ads that were tl;dr ...

C&D are still operating from their barn near Redditch and are very helpful.

I used to use the shop in Acocks Green (run by their dad) many years ago which was quite a treasure trove.

I used a Unique oil Filter from this firm.It uses a Royal Enfield filter.

I like the small size as my 31 Ariel VF has very little room to install one. It now sits under the timing cover hidden from most prying eyes.Once I get the 31 model 20 back together next year,I will look at where to place this filter on the bike.

The vokes filter element can be found but takes some research, alternative is to get some new filter media and take the brass cage apart to swap new for the old, it was supposed to be washable but after all these years ?
