What a wonderful project -…
What a wonderful project - a pre-war camshaft Norton with contemporary numbers. The Club dating officer will be able to give you definite confirmation of what left the factory but the engine is certainly a CS1 and the numbers seem to be in the correct area.
I only have copies of pages relating to WD production so anything else is chance but I see that 81114 was also a CS1 with an engine number very close to yours and it was despatched during June 1937 which probably puts yours around the same time.

Hi David The 5 prefix deno…
Hi David
The 5 prefix denotes an ES2, don't worry the CS1 used the same frame!
See attached picture, I hope it's now small enough.

Clearly a worthless bitsa, common old ES2 frame, and one of those dodgy OHC engines. I am prepared to offer a few quid to take it off your hands!
Any help?
Cheers

Yes I agree Alan, not real…
Yes I agree Alan, not really worth the time and effort to restore, but it would be ideal for holding the shed door shut and I'd happily give David a fiver for it
What an absolutely fantastic find, I would love that as my next project, well done David, and please keep us informed of your progress

Here is a little more on how I came to purchase the Norton:
Approximately 28 years ago I was looking for a British twin BSA/Triumph. I went into my local buildersâ merchants one day to get some materials (Iâm a builder) and started chatting to the sales assistant about bikes. He told me he had a 1965 BSA Lightning Clubman (only 200 made) but he did not want to sell it at the time. He stored it in the builderâs merchants shed so let me have a look.
Over the next 10 years I tried continually to buy it but was never successful. He did however tell me he would give me first refusal on the bike if he ever wanted to sell it and took my telephone number. Unfortunately he got the sack shortly after!
18 years passed. Then, three weeks ago I got a phone call from him asking me if I was still interested in the BSA. I said, âYES PLEASEâ. He said he also had 2 other bikes I might also be interested in. He told me he had them stored in a shed on a farm in the New Forest (about 5 miles away from me) and he hadnât himself seen them for 16 years!
We met at the farm and after cutting away the undergrowth opened the door to a solid wall of cobwebs! Behind, there were the three bikes wrapped in old electric blankets. A 1965 BSA Lightning Clubman, a 1937 Norton CS1! and a 1947 Scott 600 Squirrel. We had a deal and they are now in my garage.

You got the BSA and the Scott too?

A bike is worth what someone will pay for it - which is why I reckon I was a mug to pay £10 for my first bike, a C11G. But I was 16 and desperate. And as for lashing out £30 on the Domi, well I clearly never learned.

Of course - 200bhp and 200mph (allegedly) - exactly what I need! And of course the added joy of telling everyone on this forum that they are fools to waste their money on Nortons. Sigh...

Pre-war 500cc OHC, probably a CS1, Arthur Carrol designed engine.
