New petrol tank

A very upsetting day when as with others I had some starting problems, with MOT overdue had to jump start - to access the battery, remove tank - Do not balance as it can fall off!!! Cost: fuel pump module £450 plus VAT and new tank £950 or respray £450 + VAT!!

Question do I buy the brand new tank and try selling the scratched one on EBay or go for a respray that may never look as good?? Alternatively does anyone have a spare new one lying around? Phil Unlucky Bloke ð?

Crikey, not having a very good day.

I`d shop around for the respray price as £450 seems a bit steep. My nephew has just had a camper van completely done for £1500.

Good luck.

Hello Phil, sorry to hear about your little slip up, I can't understand why so many 961 owners have not purchased a battery conditioner, why do you think Norton fitted the plug in the rear for, It takes a completely full charged battery to turn over 961 cc. Mine is plugged in all the time when the bike is in the garage , bike is now coming up to 4th birthday no starting issues same battery.

mine has also, however this was the second occasion it needed a jump start. Same "rattling" noise as described by other owners. I had it out for a good run two weeks previously.. Just lucky I guess!!

Phil I would be very surprised if you can achieve afinish that is as good as the original, unless you are an accomplished sprayer and have access to a professionaly built booth and equipment. I have seen many "home painted" tanks over the years and they all look like a DIY job frankly.

I would take the tank to a specialist and let them create a wonderful finish for you. The tank is most certaimly the most important painted item on the bike. It creates its identity after all.

I don't know where you are, but if you are near, say 100 miles or so, to Leicester then I would highly recommend Faircharm. Look at his work on the web.His quality is second to none, and his customer base would support this..........normal disclaimers apply, just a very, very, very saisfied customer.

Thanks Micahel, their website shows some stunning work, I'll call them tomorrow. Appreciate your recommendation.. Phil

Hi Phil

I had a similar experience when my 961 fell of the sidestand onto my car! damaging the tank, I sent it to Dream Machine who do Nortons paint anyway, it came back good as new for a very reasonable cost.As an aside how noisy is your primary drive on tickover? mine sounds like a cement mixer despite the later type clutch basket recently fitted at considerable cost at the massive mileage of 10K, Nortons say it's the highest mileage one they have seen! At what point does this become unacceptable?

Regards Nigel

What Ho

Two things really; If you live near Telford' seek out Robin Cheshire for spraying of tanks. The man is an artist and good bloke and will quote a good price.

Secondly; 961 that is groaning after 10k. I was in the markrt for one but am now reconsidering

Thanks Nigel, I've used Dream Machine before and yes they're good. Regarding the noise, it's agricultural but not horrendous

Cheers Andy,

I've only done 6000 miles, but except for the battery life it's all been good..

Hi Andy

It's always been noisy, but still great to ride, it's always been noisy even with the new basket, these are handbuilt unique bikes so there's bound to be some variation, mine is an early one , I believe they are more developed now, it's now done 12K, and I would usually reckon on 20k before a modern bike with synthetic oils would be run in, my point is I am surprised Norton consider this high mileage! does no one else ride theirs? Dont' be put off buying one, they are 'real' bikes with personality, I love mine despite the historic faults which as I say are ironed out now on current bikes.

Cheers Nigel

Hi

I have soon 14'000 miles on the clock. The several issues I had are all put somewhere here in this forum. What kept going on, is the mentioned rattling noise... For the rest I am happy now, but had to pay for some warranty issues on my own.
