Navigator gear selector shift fork 041343

Forums

In the aftermath of the moved out gear lever shaft bushing and the resulting difficulties in shifting gears the bushing was glued into the housing and the missing washers were added. A friend of mine altered a metric washer to fit the shaft.

Today I wanted to rebuild the gearbox and found a stuck second gear pinion on the layshaft and a badly worn out gear selector fork. Both are damaged because of heat. They were both discoloured. We managed to get the pinion moving by careful grinding and filing.

Where can I find a selector fork 041343?
The NOC spares shop has none.

Hi Uli,

I believe Norvil have had selector forks manufactured for the early gearbox.

O41343 and 041341 forks.

Uli,

You state ... friend of mine altered a metric washer to fit the shaft.

The selector spindle has TWO washers. As per the photo I attached on an earlier thread. A thin washer on the inside of the spindle bush and a thicker washer on the outside of the bush.
Correctly sized the two washers allow minimal shaft end float at the bush.
They prevent the bush moving in or out of the gearbox inner.
They do not clamp the gearbox inner when the spindle retaining nut is tightened.

I can only see one washer in your picture. It looks like a modified metric washer, still at full thickness.

Perhaps you have put a thin washer inboard and out of shot, but from your text I have doubts. Without the inboard washer the bush is free to move outwards again.

If a replacement fork is isn't available then building up the worn surface with suitable material will work.  I've done it with bronze welding rod, worked okay.  Both sides of the fork would need doing if the fork is hard because the heat will soften the steel, if its intended to be hard.
Machining the built up area needs to been done carefully to ensure the load is distributed over the length of the fork.
I would also have a look at the groove the fork runs in, with wear on the fork like that I would have thought the groove would have suffered as well.

Peter, there is a washer on the inbord side. My friend had to modify a washer by increasing the hole for the spindle and the thickness to allow a little movement as you stated.
Norvil has the original washers in their list of Lightweight parts. I have already contacted them if they are available together with the selector fork.
