Mark 3 problems

Forums

I live near Glasgow and have problems with the starter (completely dead) and also running problems with my 1976 Commando. Can anyone recommend a decent chap or mechanic that could help solve problem?

Hopefully it's the solenoid, bridge the 2 heavy terminals with a thick lump of steel like a screw driver, if the motor turns then replace solenoid.

Make sure your battery, solenoid, cables and switch gear are up to scratch or better. If they are, then your starter is due an overhaul, new brushes bearings etc. The original prestolite starters (two pole and plain bush bearings) are marginal at best. They will eventually short out the rotor windings on the drive end cap as the axial location of the rotor is dire. They can be upgraded to four pole four brush and roller bearings which will turn the engine over like a jap bike.

I have done this for a few clients now as well as modifying new harley starters to fit commandos. These can be had for £80 ish on ebay

regards

Peter
