Is the above brass or bronze? Going to Founders Day tommorow so will buy suitable material to make. I belive the end float should be approx 1/32inch, What is the thickness of a new one? John

These thrust washers are still available if you search around, I think I bought one last year from Russell Motors and certainlyNorvil currently list them, along with a few other usefullaydown components, surprisinglyon their post-1957 AMC gearbox page, part number 020328. Hope this helps.

The NOC shop lists the thrust washer #A2/328. Saves making one!
As far as thickness goes, the workshop manual states to replace the washer if it is less than 1/4" thick or the oil grooves have worn off.

That explains the end float, the washer is considerably thinner than 1/4inch. Yes I see they are available through the spares scheme but just thought nearly twenty quid was a bit stiff for a washer. Picked up a 6inch length of Bronze today for £10. I have the time and a lathe.

Does it have a plain washer ? Aren't they splined onto the mainshaft in the same way as the earlier boxes ?

They are splined onto the main shaft and run against a hardened steel washer (oil grooves to washer) which fits in the main gear wheel, on top of the 13 X 1/4" Dia.rollers.

Bronze is the onlybearing material to use, brass is softandwould soon chew out in that situation.
There is an inexpensivethrust needle roller conversion that some have done.
