Laydown gearbox thrust washer

Is the above brass or bronze? Going to Founders Day tommorow so will buy suitable material to make. I belive the end float should be approx 1/32inch, What is the thickness of a new one? John

Bronze is the onlybearing material to use, brass is softandwould soon chew out in that situation.

There is an inexpensivethrust needle roller conversion that some have done.

These thrust washers are still available if you search around, I think I bought one last year from Russell Motors and certainlyNorvil currently list them, along with a few other usefullaydown components, surprisinglyon their post-1957 AMC gearbox page, part number 020328. Hope this helps.

The NOC shop lists the thrust washer #A2/328. Saves making one!

As far as thickness goes, the workshop manual states to replace the washer if it is less than 1/4" thick or the oil grooves have worn off.

That explains the end float, the washer is considerably thinner than 1/4inch. Yes I see they are available through the spares scheme but just thought nearly twenty quid was a bit stiff for a washer. Picked up a 6inch length of Bronze today for £10. I have the time and a lathe.

Does it have a plain washer ? Aren't they splined onto the mainshaft in the same way as the earlier boxes ?

They are splined onto the main shaft and run against a hardened steel washer (oil grooves to washer) which fits in the main gear wheel, on top of the 13 X 1/4" Dia.rollers.
