Jubilee foot rest bar - thread and nut size

Forums

Does anyone know the thread type and nut size for the foot rest bar on late Jubilee? This is the hexagon profile bar that passes through the frame and holds the foot rests.

I am restoring a Jubilee that I bought disassembled and there are no nuts on the foot rest bar. Also, the threads are in poor condition and bar is bent slightly.

I was going to buy a new one from the NOC shop but they are out of stock so I will try to restore the threads with a die.

A constant problem with the restoration is the sheer number and type of threads on this bike!

If anyone has a list of threads from a previous restoration that would be a great help. Or, failing that, 'rules' for threads for various parts e.g. Cycle thread for frame parts, UNC for engine cases, etc.

Some nuts seem to start OK but tighten after a few threads making me doubt that I have the correct ones.

Despite all that I am enjoying the restoration process and the NOC shop is great source of parts.

Hello Dennis,

Yes there are an assortment of threads on a Jubilee but in general you are correct in saying that Cycle thread is mostly used for frame parts and the engine cases are UNC. A proper engineer would probably say that the engine case screws are really Whitworth but UNC do definitely fit without causing any problems and I am told that Whitworth and UNC are effectively inter-changeable,at least at these particular sizes .

My footrest bar seems to be threaded 1/2" Cycle thread - but if your threads are worn then you will have to rethread the bar in a smaller size so you can use what you like. UNF or Metric nuts/bolts are usually much cheaper to buy and who is going to query this unless you are seriously into concours.

The foot rest bar on my 67 jubilee doesn’t look long enough. Does anyone know the correct overall length of the hexagonal foot rest bar please? My one is 14” including the threaded section

My footrest bar is to the original length I believe. The bike has all original spacers and footrests. I've braved the elements to the garage with measuring sticks.

It is 15.0 ins long.

It is made from hexagon bar 0.525 ins across the flats which is the same size as a 5/16 BSW nut or 3/8 BSC nut. Once you know this you should be able to get the correct hexagon bar from a supplier knowledgeable of British BSW/BSF hexagon sizes. Mallard Metals are good and may have it in stainless.

Each end is turned down to 0.5 ins diameter, for 0.5 ins long, and threaded 1/2 ins BSC as stated above by Patrick.

The nuts are 0.816 ins across the flats. (7/16 BSW spanner size)

The nuts are 0.432ins long (standard full nut, chamfered one outer edge only)

I confirm that the original steel rods and nuts had a habit of relaxing, and needing regular tightening. Often the fine BSC thread gives up. The stainless nuts and hex bar offered by the NOC spares are very good and seem tough enough to last.

Hope this helps.

Peter
