Inner primary chaincase query

My 1952 ES2 just has a big oval hole where the mainshaft from the gearbox comes through which seems a prime location for oil to drip out. ISTR that Commandos had a sliding disc arrangement to minimise this. Also, the parts books illustrations show an "eyebrow" above the hole - presumably again intended to reduce oil loss - which mine hasn't got.

I was wondering whether to attach a little sheet steel gutter arrangement so that any oil dripping from the inner side of the chain would be diverted away from the hole. Or maybe even adapt a Commando style arrangement?

Any thoughts?

I made a largeish felt washer to fit on the mainshaft between the back of the clutch and the inner chaincase. There isn't much oil there to leak out but it seemed sensible to seal it somehow.

Where did you get the felt from? Did you make the centre hole a close fit on the gearbox shaft?

I do now remember that I made a leather washer for a Matchless G80 I had a few years ago for the same reason.

I "borrowed' mine from SWMBO. Well. to be fair, she gave it to me. It was bit thin so I glued a couple of pieces together and cut the centre hole just a bit bigger than the clutch axle. It will ultimately wear out but it does hold the oil back a bit. Did the same behind the drive end of the p/chaincase between the case and the crankcase. George

I didn't glue mine to anything, just made sure it was slightly compressed between the case and clutch. The felt I used was about 1/4" inch thick. No idea where it came from as a friend gave it to me and I cut out the size I wanted. If you're going to the Stafford show there will be at least one trade stand selling felt. There's a stand, usually in the main hall, that sells rubber pipe & gasket material etc, they usually have felt.

Didn't glue mine either. Just fit it as Ian says. As the colour is irrelevant (mine are bright orange) you might try a fabric shop and ask if they've got any old samples?cut-offs which you could have. George

The purpose of the oval hole is to allow movement of the gearbox, when adjusting the primary chain, On my Dominator (similar chaincase)), a felt pad is attached to a thin metal plate, this slides in two grooves, keeping it in contact with the inner face of the chaincase, No leaks!
