How do I remove rear wheel?

Forums

Help! What have I forgotten? I've removed RH rear spindle, spacer and top hat washer, speedo gear box, 3 rubber grommets and the 3 sleeve nuts, - and the wheel is still stuck fast to the drum. Not happened before - last time the wheel was off was a bout 18 months ago for a new tyre. Shortly I'll have to try wedges and a big hammer - unless someone has welded it all up in my shed...

Hi David. Assuming Dommi?

I've never tried to do it that way before. I turn the wheel adjusters in, loosen both spindles, push the wheel forward to get some slack in the chain and then disconnect the chain. Next undo the brake rod nut, undo the speedo cable and pull the whole thing out as an assembly.

Hope this helps

It's either wedges or take the whole assembly out I'm afraid. The so-called QD isn't particularly clever and it's relatively common for the three studs to become tight on the hub. Better than loose I suppose, but a right pain if you have a roadside puncture to repair. Bring back the hinged mudguard!

Thanks, both. I was beginning to consider leaving the nuts loose and riding round the block a couple ot times. Maybe a bit rash. Very annoying.

I thought of that one too, but didn't dare post it! Wedges are probably not a good idea either. First try a few sharp blows, with a wooen mallet, or hide faced hammer, hitting the tyre, not the rim. If that doesn't work, you will have to remove the whole hub, as one unit. Best of luck, I will soon need a new rear tyre, so, may have the same problem!

Dear Mr Cooper,

The drive side bearing housing outer diameter on the aluminium hub has a slight taper on it that can sometimes seize in the cast iron drive sprocket inner housing. Just keep rocking the wheel side to side whilst the brake drum is firmly held by the drive side nut - eventually it will give. When reassembling put a dab/smear of copperslip on the nose of the drive side aluminium outer bearing diameter and you'll not have the problem again.

Regards,

Peter Bolton

Thanks everyone. Not forgotten anything except patience. Copperslip and reassembled. The cast iron spigots that enter the side plate of the hub were jammed but careful screwdriver leverage and 3-in-1 spray got them off. Glad it was in the shed and not on the road. Hope it doesn't come loose on the road next...
