Help required from Model 7 owners

Forums

I replicate below my post on the Singles message board in relation to my 1955 ES2, in the hope that some knowledgable 1955 Model 7 owners may have an answer.

I have now received my ES2 seat from Leightons, and a very nice seat it is.

It has the correct seat pan, with fixing holes in the same places as the original (when compared with photograps of the original from other members). It is the correct shape and I am very confident it is a copy of an original, which is exactly what Leighons said it was.

I also have some very helpful photographs from other NOC members, which show the mounting bracket at the rear, and some descriptions of where the mounting bracket should go to at the front. (but no picture of it)

However, when I place the new seat in postion, correctly positioned behind the fuel tank, it doesn't appear to be supported by, or line up with, any part of the frame. As and when I make up new brackets to line up with the mounting points on the frame and the rear mudguard, with the seat correctly positioned with reference to the fuel tank, the seat appears to be supported only by the brackets, it doesn't contact the frame anywhere inbetween them. The curvature and assorted recesses in the seat pan seem to be completely arbitrary, and bear no relationship to the shape of the frame underneath.

This all seems rather odd to me. The seat was only fitted to this frame, and only for 1 year, why on earth did they "sculpt" it in this way if it doesn't line up with the frame anywhere?

Am I missing something? Any help, suggestions, photographs and explanations gratefully received.

Paul.

Paul I have just replied to your message in " singles" I think there is a slight difference between ES2 andM-7 in the frame in this area, on a model 7 the rear tank mont goes through a castng in the rear corner of the frame under the seat, as a 55 ES2 thetank mounts differntlyI don't beleive this casting is on an ES2 frame and therefor an ES2 front seat bracket must attachthrough the tank tunnel to the casting that I beleive your rear tank mounts attaches to.

Hi Paul,

The part used on the Model 7 is completely different to the singles. On the 7 it mounts on the rear tank mount while on the ES2 it is a long bracket that requires removal of the tank to access it's mounts part way along the top tube. It extends back to a flat plate with two holes for the front seat bolts.

You're looking for part number K4/1094.

Many thanks for your responses. I now have a clearer understanding of what I need to fabricate. Thanks for the part number Jim, I will keep my eye peeled for an original (I suspect it will be a long wait) smiley
