Helicoil thread repair

Forums

Just in case anyone cares, I had great success repairing the rear brake pedal pivot bolt on my 16H using a 1/2 inch 20tpi helicoil repair kit.

The thread in the frame itself was knackered, the kit came with a 33/64 drill, HSS tap, 5 stainless inserts andinstallationtool. It took me around 20 mins in total to drill out, re-tap and install the insert and, although it was listed as UNF thread, the cycle thread on the bolt was a good tight fit in the repair.

My brake pedal no longer moves under pressure and the rear brake no longer feels spongey and feels much more positive in use (as you would expect)

If anyone has a similar issue I would recommend this procedure, kit was a Draper one, costing around £20 on ebay. (Other kits from other companies are available)

...I bought a kit like Paul's from Sealey for a repair on my ES2 a year ago. It was £30. which stung a bit as it was surely a 'one off' repair. Since then I have used it twice to repair a gearbox level plug on a %$£^&@ Speed Twin and a gearbox pivot bolt on the same. Quids in! You never can tell.....
