Good afternoon all,
                              Question?Exhaust pipes glowing cherry red,whats your money on?incorrect ign timing or weak mixture?

It's not a gamble.

Set the ignition correctly, then follow the carburettor tuning procedure.

Some pattern exhaust pipes are made of such thin tubing they will quickly go red hot when the engine is run hard..  Any Chroming will then turn blue.  Then they start to rust. 
Below are my cheapo replacement pipes after just 20 miles.The previous standard Armours set had covered 10,000 miles and were in perfect condition but I wanted some swept backs. 
The Ignition Timing and Carb settings were not changed.

Pictures of down pipes on my Commando after 1,500 miles still look new now with 2,100 miles on them. Bought off eBay. I did internally coat them with 5 coats of Kreem Blue before fitting.

On a 1930 Ford model A with distributor fitted wrong way. Ignition timing my bet.

Just the once when the ignition timing slipped. Blued exhausts are different - often an indication that the bike is being used to its full potential.

Flame front is running down the pipe because ignition was too late...

Heard a story about a WD sidevalve  ,possibly running on parafin  where the engine got so hot the shadow of the piston  moving could be seen through the red hot cylinder. Thats hot !.  I once got the carb running so weak on the 99 that it continued running like a diesel with the ignition turned off.  Saved from seizure only by fully synth oil .

If true, I'd guess it was in the 1920s with a cast-iron piston.

BTW I was at a rally in the Victorian high country in the 1980s, a bloke did a burn out at night on a 750 Commando, pipes were red down to the horizontal bits.

Got up the next day started ok, got back to Melbourne OK, no clutch slip or any other I'll effects.

When the piston expands to bigger than the bore, it seizes.  Type of oil makes no difference.

I had a glowing exhaust pipe on a 2 stroke.........once, it was in the dark and the lights were so bad the glowing pipe aided me to see where I was going down the lane!
